A zoologist by training Nic obtained his BSc from the University of
Nottingham. Following his leading a six month expedition to West Africa, a
year in the planning and for which Nic received Fellowship of the Royal
Geographical Society, he returned to complete a PhD at the University of
Surrey whilst seconded to a medical research institute in West Sussex. It
was here where Nic conducted research into the nature of virus associated
heart disease in man. Moving into the commercial world in 1980 Nic developed
wide experience as a commercial director working in Germany, the US and in
the UK, predominantly in the healthcare field; latterly as a research
director in the IT and communications market intelligence field and as
managing director of his own Internet based corporate events and business
information research company. Throughout Nic's business career he maintained
his lifelong involvement in marine environmental and sustainability issues
through his writing and presentations.
In support of Nic's detailed knowledge of the whales and dolphins and other
marine wildlife that inhabit the coastal waters of Ireland he holds
DCMNR/Ministry of Transport certificates in personal survival techniques and
first aid at sea. He holds a category B endorsement to his license to
operate in Irish waters with an advanced powerboat certificate issued by the
Irish Sailing Association and Yacht Master Offshore qualification issued by
the Royal Yachting Association. Nic qualified as an SAA SCUBA Dive Leader in
1978 and has conducted a number of whale and dolphin and other wildlife
watching expeditions to remote parts of the globe including Africa, the USA,
Australia and New Zealand during the past few years. This collective
experience makes Slocum an ideal and entertaining host to conduct whale and
dolphin watching tours along the Irish south coast for families, individuals
and marine wildlife experts alike.
